Doris Casap

Doris Casap is a producer, executive producer, film and television executive, and adjunct professor at NYU Tisch. She founded her company, MOTHER FILMS, after a 28-year run at HBO, where she was SVP, Film Programming and Acquisition. In the first year of MOTHER FILMS, Doris executive-produced and sold (to Amazon and Peacock) “A Most Beautiful Thing”, a documentary depicting the journey of the country’s first all-Black rowing team, a group of high schoolers from Chicago’s West Side, exec producers included Grant Hill and Dwayne Wade, with music by Common. She was also a consulting producer on “SURGE”, an account of the galvanization of female candidates during the 2018 midterms, following three House races, exec producers included Alyssa Milano and Katie Couric, which sold to Amazon.

 

She produced the award-winning short film, "F^¢K '€M R!GHT B@¢K" which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The film has since screened at numerous prestigious festivals, including the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, BFI Flare in London, Tribeca, Palm Springs ShortsFest, and won “best comedy” at Aspen Shorts Fest.

 

She currently serves on the board of Almanack Screenwriters, as an advisor for the Chelsea Film Festival, and as an advisor for Phanes Film Group, and is a member of WIP (Women Independent Producers).

 

For Doris, mental health representation, as a “normal” element of people’s lives as well as the character depictions in films, television, and media, is a matter of personal importance and public interest.  Her family has, like everyone’s family, had experience with the roadblocks and challenges of sometimes ‘invisible’ special needs and differences in all aspects of life – from education, work, and general well-being.  Being able to openly discuss and accept these differences without stigma is vital to everyone’s well-being.
